He who regards all men as equal is religious. ~ Guru Nanak Dev.

SIKKHISM

Sikkhism is the only major known religion existing in the world which has traces of a living personality (Kartarpuri bir). Unlike Chirstianity and Islam, Sikkhism is also a monotheistic religion but it has a recorded revelation of a living known person who had ever existed, in Islam and Christianity there are holy books where it is written about their supreme power but those books were written after the death of their disciples.

Sikkhism arose in the 16th century. The people who practice Sikkhism are known as Sikhs. It was founded by Guru Nanak Dev, who was born in Lahore, Punjab (now in Pakistan) Guru is a teacher. He was followed by 9 sikh gurus and all over there are only 10 gurus who had ever existed in Sikkhism after that the teachings are only taken from their holy book called as Guru Granth Sahib as there are no more Guru's so they regard their holy book as Guru.

Guru Granth Sahib contains the preachings and teaching of the 10 gurus as well as some teachings of other religions. No one is allowed to make any changes in the book. It is considered as the most holy and important part of their religion. Unlike Mosque in Islam, Church in Christianity, Temples in Hinduism, a place of worship for the Sikhs is known as Gurudwara means Gateway to the Guru. It is a holy place of worship where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed. The book is written in Punjabi language and is highly worshipped by the people as the living God. It is kept on a raised platform and all the Sikhs take off their footwear before coming near to it. They also chant prayers known as keertan. A mass meal service also held at Gurudwara everyday where all the people are equally served with food known as langar.

The sikh community is known as khalsa (i.e. community of pure). The baptised Sikhs are required to follow and wear the 5 k's which include :

  • kangha (comb)
  • ‌kada (steel bracelet)
  • ‌kesh (hair)
  • ‌kripan (sword)
  • ‌kachcha (shorts/underwear)

Sikhs believe in only one god and they believe all are equal in front of god so one should pay more attention to their actions and words and must lead a good life. They do not believe in worshipping diety, according to Sikhs God is one, he is neither of any gender nor of any shape and is omnipresent (who is present everywhere).

I would like to end by quoting something true and very special which Sikkhism believes is :

" All the religions are the flower of the same garden having belief on the same God".

One of the most famous pilgrimage of Sikkhism is the Golden Temple of Amritsar, India. Sikkhism is followed in many parts of the world.
