Why is India struggling at tennis.

For a sport to grow it needs to have few things going and currently Tennis lacks that in India.

1.Its very expensive to play tennis in India compared to other sports like Cricket, football and recently Badminton. Young kids can start playing these sports with inexpensive equipment even in small grounds or in even in Car parks inside apartments and then if kids like the sport they can enroll into the academy or coaching centers but to start the playing the sport it's simple and easy but for tennis, it's not possible to play tennis just for fun, need to join Club or coaching camp which not many middle-class kids can afford.Of course, to play professional Cricket badminton or football we need expensive equipment but at least then kids and parents and coaches can make a decision based on kids talent but for tennis right away it requires money which is a problem

2.Nationalism: Don’t get me wrong but Indians tend to follow sports only if fellow Indians are doing well . A recent example is Badminton with a now whole host of men and women on the world stage and Premier badminton league even World stars come and play in India but Indian tennis success is far and few between. In last 3 years Yuki bambari ,Ramkumr Ramnathan and now prajneesh Gunaswaren all broke into top 100 but could not take it further and Doubles achievements of Leander and Mahesh and Sania are respected but we all know that Doubles is just side show in tennis internationally

3.Tennis is very physical sport so generally indians dont have the physique to play it at the highest level (Of course there are exceptions ).Somdev Devvarman broke into top 100 but still retired early due to injuries .
