Madden 21: The Best New Feature Zone Drops

The new coaching adjustments for Zone Drops will be most welcomed in Madden 21

The biggest and best new feature in Madden 21 for anyone that plays the game seriously is the new zone drops feature. You can now set the depth that your underneath zone defenders will drop to in your pre-play adjustments menu.

These coaching adjustments will give you the ability to change the drop depths of Flat, Hook and Curl-Flat zones in increments of 5 yards, up to a max of 30 yards from the line of scrimmage. When using these adjustments, keep in mind that all Match Zone logic will be disabled in all zone coverage plays while using the Deep Zone players' adjustments. When facing a no-huddle offense, you can turn off these coaching adjustments by using the ‘Reset Play’ option in the Pre-Play Adjustments menu.

For example, if you want your cloud flat defenders to drop back 20 yards to defend deep corner routes, you can do that. If you want your hook zone defenders to defend shallow drag routes, you can do that too by setting their depth a little shorter.

This is a huge improvement for defense in Madden 21! If you know an exact route combination is coming, you now have the tools to stop it.

It is worth noting that the zone drops only apply to the underneath shallow zones and not deep blue zones.

If you're new to madden or not exactly sure what the colored zones mean on defense, I've snagged some information for you to hopefully better understand.

Yellow: This is a Hook zone. Generally is going to play about 5+ yards off the ball. This is one that does not come forward towards the ball normally.

Light blue: Flat zone. The only zone route that presses automatically (if lined up on someone). They stay near the line on the outside.

Purple: Buzz zone. Plays 5-10 yards off the line on the outside; they will come upon routes into the flat, but if they don't get sucked forward (due to spotlighting or no flat zone area flood) can often make plays deeper outside as well.

Dark blue: Deep zone. It does what you probably expect: plays the deep zones field.

Another change in Madden 21 on defense is that you will not want to QB contain any play on defense. In Madden 20, every good defensive setup ended in using QB Contain. EA Sports has made some adjustments to the pass rush to bring better balance to the game. If you use the QB to contain a feature, your players will rush slower and wider than they would if you did a regular pass rush. You will now have to decide whether to contain a mobile QB or bring a faster blitz.
