Dwarka: Gateway to Heaven

The city of Dwarka has its own mythological and historical importance. Hindu pilgrims from around the world visit the place because of their believe and faith. This city is also famous for its great architecture of temples and lovely beaches.

Dwarka a city with mythological importance as it was the capital of lord Krishna to where he had migrated from Mathura region. The city has gained much attraction because the site is one of the four Dhamas (secret places for pilgrimage) of the Hindu religion. Adi Shankaracharya established the 'Dwarka Peeth' what spreading the message of Hindu gospel Ramayana in Dwarka.  The city is believed to have been the first capital of Gujarat. The city’s name literally means gateway. According to legends, Krishna settled here after he defeated and killed his uncle kansa at Mathura. This mythology school account of Krishna as migration to Dwarka from Mathura is closely associated with the culture of Gujarat. Krishna is also said to have reclaimed 96 square kilometres of land from sea to create Dwarka. Dwarka Nath also referred by the name Trilok Sundar is believed to be built by Vajranabh, Loard Krishna’s successor and great grandson.

Dwarka is mentioned in a number of texts including Mahabharat, The Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta, the Harivamsha as well as Skanda Purana. The city was also extremely well planned divided into 6 sectors which were in turn divided into residential, commercial areas. The city was also said to be the home beautiful large road garden and artificial lakes. It is said that it was submerged in the big flood 9,000 years ago. Considered the holy city Dwarka is well known for its temples. the Dwarkadhish temple also called Jagat Mandal located in the heart of Dwarka is a Vaishnav temple. It was built by Raja Jagat Singh Rathore hands it is called Jagat mandir. It is constructed that this temple location is is 2500 years old and is where Krishna built his city and temple. The next temple is Rukmani Devi dedicated to Rukmani Krishna chief wife with holy place for pilgrims. The temple is said to be 2500 years old it is richly craved temple decorated with sculptures of gods and goddesses on the exterior with the sanctum housing the main image of Rukmini. The gomtighat consists of steps leading to the Gomti river which is also holy place for pilgrims to take a DIP in the river before visiting Dwarkadhish temple. The ghat has a number of small shrines dedicated to the samudra God of the sea.

The best place to see the sunset in the Dwarka city is at Badkeshwar Mahadev temple. this is an ancient and small temple located on what must have been an Island at some point of time. It is a perfect place to take pictures with light house. Adding more history to the city, a stone inscription dating back to 2nd BCE can be seen at ASI office. It is a fairly large triangular stone.

The city of Dwarka has a use number of significance in mythology as well as history. So if you are devotee or not just visit the city once for its beauty historical significance mythology and beautiful architecture of its temples.
