A ball valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a spherical ball with a hole in it to control the flow of fluids (liquids or gases) through a pipeline or system. Ball valves are valued for their simple design, reliability, and quick operation.

The primary function of a ball valve is to regulate the flow of a fluid by controlling the position of a ball inside the valve body. The ball has a hole, called the bore, drilled through its center. When the bore aligns with the inlet and outlet ports of the valve, fluid can flow through. By rotating the ball 90 degrees (a quarter turn), the bore can be aligned perpendicular to the ports, blocking the flow completely.

Working:

Open Position: When the valve handle or actuator is turned so that the bore of the ball aligns with the inlet and outlet ports, fluid can flow through the valve. The fluid passes through the bore without significant obstruction.
Closed Position: When the valve handle or actuator is rotated 90 degrees, the bore of the ball becomes perpendicular to the ports, blocking the flow completely. The fluid is unable to pass through the valve
Partial Flow: Ball valves can also be used to control the flow partially. By rotating the valve handle or actuator to a position between fully open and fully closed, the bore partially obstructs the flow, allowing for precise flow control.
Sealing: In closed position, the ball presses against the valve seats, which are usually made of soft materials like PTFE (Teflon), creating a tight seal and preventing leakage.
