Feminism is defined as the belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. Feminists around the world advocate rights of women, blaming patriarchy as the main cause of women's misery. The concept has since evolved and present till date with people now questioning is modern-day feminism relevant?
The first wave of feminism focused on discourse of rights, demanding political and civil rights explicity in their work. They ended up achieving women suffrage in New Zealand, US constitution granted the right to vote to women in 1893 and 1920 respectively. The second wave focused on personal, psychological and sexual aspects. it was of a more radical concern in the private spheres of life focusing on sexuality and oppression. What is debated today by many is the Third Wave of feminism claiming that this is not real feminism and fosters misandry. A campaign started in July 2013, titled The Women Against Feminism campaign in response to the "Who Needs Feminism " campaign sparked this issue. women took to social media sites like Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook posting their selfies with hashtags like #WomenAgainstFeminism. it argued that as long as men and women are equal before the law, feminism is unnecessary and distracts from men's rights issues.
Kamla Bhasin a feminist herself, in her book talks about how patriarchy affects both men and women. She talks about Indian men being subjected to toxic masculinity and being oppressed by patriarchy themselves. Opponents of feminism today stand against this negligence to men's rights. opposing modern feminism or third wave feminism, anti-feminist today believe that feminism centers around man-hating, victimization, misandry and misogyny. These groups however make it quite clear that they are not against the first and second wave of feminism and only stress on the hypocrisy of modern day feminism.
Savitribai Phule is regarded as the first female teacher of India. Along with her husband she played a vital role in improving women's rights in India. often regarded as the mother of Indian feminism, Phule found the first Indian girl's school in Pune in 1848. Betty Friedan, was a second wave feminist in America who found and was elected as the first National Organization for Women aimed to bring women "into the mainstream of American society in fully equal partnership to men". Sadly, compared to this, today feminism is reduced to consider hundreds of women running around topless in the streets of New York on Go Topless Day a campaign for equal rights.
