TRAPPED IN social media
Although difficult to believe but the truth is that Social media wasn’t exactly invented to be a platform of hypocrisy and the barometer of coolness. The purpose was more noble, like globalization and Freedom of speech. Providing a platform to people so that views could reach even the most remote corners of the world. Some might say it’s a very glass half empty way to judge. So, let us see the glass-half-full side of the story. Social media has connected people all over the world, now many things are just a click away, People are aware of things which happen across the ocean, in short, the world has come closure and people have got their hands over more knowledge.
In the words of the amazing spiderman
“Great power comes with great responsibility”.
To take an example, let’s talk about cyberbullying. Did you know that 24 of every 10,000 people in South Korea commit suicide? Many of them are famous pop-singers and actors(commonly referred to as idols). The pressure of maintaining the perfect idol image and lack of personal space sometimes gets too suffocating. Some insignificant mean and hateful comment from you can cost someone their life. Who is responsible for these deaths?
Now you know what everyone is doing with their life. Your work colleagues, friends, neighbor, their children, their relatives even their dogs, you know about them all. With knowing comes comparison which is accompanied by envy. The absurdity is that you get jealous of someone you don’t even know. You are now preoccupied with pleasing a bunch of strangers you may never meet, who don’t care about you, but still, their opinions somehow matter to you. In this maddening urge to meet other’s social standards to be labeled as ‘cool’, your happiness is left somewhere far behind.
Every coin has two sides, the one can’t exist without other. The choice is on you, which side will you choose.
