This article talks about the wrongful association of 5G networks to Covid-19.

Nowadays, it seems that conspiracy theories are spreading almost as fast as the Coronavirus itself. There were many conspiracy theories that started making rounds about the Coronavirus outbreak, one such theory blamed the 5G technology for the spread of the virus. There have been many versions of this misinformation, some of them are:

  • The Coronavirus outbreak started in Wuhan, China because the first 5G technology was trialled there.
  • 5G technology is directly spreading Covid-19 in the community.
  • Some claim that the Coronavirus was deliberately created to keep people home while the 5G tecchnology was being installed in cities.
  • Others claim that 5G technology weakens people's immune system.

One of the most popular conspiracy theories is that the virus is man-made and is spreading by 5G radiowaves. This went to such an extreme extent that some 100 5G masts were vandalized and damaged and even set on fire. Some people claim that both 5G technology and the Coronavirus pandemic are deliberate attempts to depopulate the earth. Some think that since both 5G technology and the Coronavirus started coming to light at the same time, they must be somehow linked. Other conspiracy theories linked to 5G technology claim that it kills birds, suppresses the immune system, causes brain cancer and much more claims along those lines.

What seems to be powering forth this conspiracy theory is the social media supporters who have formed many Facebook groups to open discussions and spread this misinformation. The number of tweets regarding this topic have only been blindly increasing. Surprisingly, even mainstream influencers with a large following seem to be promoting this idea. The same people who spread such misinformation continue to wear masks and practice social-distancing. There have been multiple government agencies that have tried to stop the spread of such misinformation but some people seem to pay no heed. Even social networking sites like Facebook are trying their best to take down posts that intend to spread fake news and misinformation related to coronavirus. YouTube is also trying to take down such videos in order to stop the spread of such misinformation.

The difference between 5G and previous generations of mobile services is that it uses frequencies in the 30-300 gigahertz range which does not have enough energy to break down chemical bonds when in contact with human tissue. Thus, it non-penetrating and therefore does not have negative health effects.
