Big Data - The Buzz Word
Why is that big data is so much of a buzzword?
Why is it so important?
Why has it suddenly become so prominent?
These are the reasons which we should actually look into one by one. 90% of this data what we're talking about the big data, has been generated in the last 2 to 3 years. If you ask the question like wasn't there so much of data before then? Exactly it was not so much of data especially the unstructured data which is contributing to the bulk of big data, like 80 to 90 percent of the big data is going to be unstructured data. So, less than 20 percent of the data is going to be structured. This unstructured data combined with the total Big Data, everything has been generated in just less than 2 to 3 years.
The problem with this data is that they are unstructured, so they cannot actually be fit into the traditional RDBMS based systems. So structured database management systems or the SQL based systems they cannot handle this kind of data. But the rate or what we're getting is in large numbers dominantly unstructured. Why is this data so interesting is because we have the technologies now in form of Hadoop and other related technologies to mine this data and trying to see if we can make some business sense out of this data? And what is the value of this analysis is that is something which is very important for the business user for the business perspective it can be of tremendous potential and most of this information actually is sitting idle in the dormant data which actually is being archived for all these years. So the companies are trying to invest and trying to dig into this data, trying to analyse the data, mine the data to figure out is there any business useful this can they make some impactful decisions based on the analysis that they do on this data.
The advantage with these big data technologies prevalent these days is that in a very cost effective manner you can actually mine this data. Traditionally it was a very expensive affair if you have to mine large amounts of data through the traditional data warehousing techniques. But now that's not the case. It's more efficient and it’s more economical and more quicker as well.
That's a reason why big data has been so prominent.
