Australia is home to more than 1.500 species of spiders, 250 species of native mammals, 680 species, over 2000 species of fish and so much more! More than 80% of our mammals, plants, reptiles, birds are unique to Australia and can be found nowhere else in the world.
Here are some fun facts about the Australian wildlife :
- Saltwater Crocodile : This is the largest reptile in the world with some males weighing as much as 1,200kg. They can also be found in the brackish, freshwater regions of eastern India. They lurk patiently beneath the surface of the water waiting for potential prey. They can remain submerged for more than an hour and are the largest of the Crocodilian species.
- Mistletoe Bird : It is also called as mistletoe flowerpecker. The mistletoebird mainly eats the berries of the parasitic mistletoe and is responsible for the spread of the mistletoe seeds. Only male mistletoe birds are red on the chest adn throat.
- Echidna : They have porcupine-like spines and are mammals that lay eggs. They have a potentially long lifespans of about 60 years.
- Laughing Kookaburra : The laughing kookaburra is a bird in the kingfisher subfamily and is usually large and robust. It is a family-oriented bird species which may call to warn off other kookaburras and estabilish the family territory. The laughing sound of one family unit differs from that of the other.
- Tasmanian Tiger : This animal is now extinct but was known to have evolved about 4 million years ago. There have been several reports that state that there have been a few sightings of the Tasmanian Tiger in recent times. They were not as vicious as they looked and could often be captured easily and were very timid. They could even stand upright on their hind legs just like kangaroos!
- Southern Cassowary : This is also called two-wattled cassowary. It is flightless, black bird that has a helmet-like structure on its head to protect it as it runs through the forest. A species of cassowary called the Northern Cassowary can change its color according to its mood! They are among the largest birds on earth.
- Koala : Koalas are herbivores that are native to Australia and feed on leaves of certain Eucalyptus trees and spend most of their time sitting or sleeping in tree forks, due to the recent Australian wildfires a majority of their species was lost hence making their species vulnerable.
