The Eiffel Tower, also called as La Tour Eiffel in French is one of the most remarkable monuments in the world. The Eiffel tower was designed to be the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. It was meant to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution and show off France’s modern mechanical expertise to the world. Since 1889, The Eiffel Tower has welcomed over 300 million people and has upto seven million visitors a year. It was built in two years, two months, and five days and it is believed that 7,500 tons of iron and 2.5 million rivets have gone into the making of this historic monument.
Here are some interesting facts about the monument:
- It has a secret apartment at the top : When the tower was built, a secret apartment was constrcted at the top and many famous guests were invited there. Now, this apartment is open for the public to tour.
- The Eiffel Tower was supposed to be torn down in 20 years : Since it was built to be the centerpiece of the 1889 World Fair and was designed and built mostly to show off France's mecahnical expertise. But later on, this plan to demolish it was tossed out.
- The Eiffel Tower has a post office : In the first floor of the tower, you can find a post office. If you choose to mail a postcard from here, it will be mailed with a special postmark.
- It takes a lot of maintenance to keep the Eiffel Tower looking good : Every few years, the Eiffel Tower is painted with about 60 tons of paint. It not only keeps it looking good, but also helps to prevent the iron from rusting.
- The top of the tower takes 1,665 steps to reacch hence most people take the lift.
- The tower shrinks : During cold weather, the tower shrinks by about six inches.
- It has many replicas : There are a number of similar monuments that were built by taking inspiration from the Eiffel Tower such as one in Las Vegas and one at the Window of the World theme park in Shenzhen, China.
- The Eiffel Tower moves : The tower sways around six to seven centimetres due to the wind.
- There are close to 20,000 lightbulbs used on the Eiffel Tower to make it sparkle every night.
- Gustave Eiffel was the engineer and architect behind the tower, he also designd some interior elements for The Statue of Liberty.
