How home gardens can contribute in enhancement of food security and well beings.

With the increasing population across the world, there has been increasing need of food production specially in developing countries where hunger, poverty and food scarcity can be seen clearly. Due to this reason, there has been increased interest to strengthen production of local food to mitigate effect of global food price volatility.

Across the world, home gardens have been considered as crucial supplemental source that contributes to security of food and nutrition of livelihoods. Home gardens which can be found in both urban and rural are have continued to play role in providing income and food for family. Home gardening refers to cultivation of small land around household which has mixed cropping system of crops, spices, herbs, fruits and vegetables.

One of the major social benefit contributed from home gardens comes from contribution to food security to household by increasing its availability, use of products and accessibility. Items of food from home gardens help to add family energy and nutritive needs .

Hence, we can not forget the cultural acceptance of home gardening which is one of the important constraints!
