Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who has served as the junior United States senator from California since 2017. She is the Democratic vice presidential nominee for the 2020 election.

Born in Oakland, California, she began her political career in the Almeda County District Attorney’s Office, before being recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and later the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. 

She surely comes off as an independent strong woman with stern political views and an utter dissaproval of president Donald Trump, as she tweets

Kamala shared her remarks on the floor of the senate before opening of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump on January 16, 2020, stating her views on the integrity of the American justice system she said that nobody including an incumbent president, is above the law. She asked Lindsey Graham to halt all judicial nominations during the impeachment trial. Harris voted president Donald Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Vice presidential Campaign

Biden committed to choosing a woman for his running mate, who better than the Kamala Harris.

On April 17, 2020, Harris said that she "would be honored" to be Biden's running mate. In response to the death of George Floyd and ensuing protests and demonstrations, Biden faced renewed calls to select a black woman to be his running mate, highlighting the law enforcement credentials of Harris. The New York Times reported that Harris was emerging as the fortrunner to be Biden’s running mate as she was the only African- American woman in the party capable to run for Vice president.

It was finally on August 11, 2020, Biden announced he had chosen Harris. She is thus the first Indian-American and the third female to be picked as the vice-presidential nominee.

Abortion

Harris has advocated completely for abortion rights and against the anti-abortion group National Right to Life Committee, since her election to the senate

Drugs

Initially Harris did not support the legalization of marijuana but later supported it. She also co-sponsored the Marijuana Justice Act which aims at legalizing cannabis.

LGBT

Harris participated in a Human Rights Campaign on the topic of LGBTQ Rights, she pledged her support "all of the folks who are fighting for equality". She is also of the view that LGBTQ people of color are doubly exposed to discrimination.
