1984 by George Orwell gives us a vivid picture on how is it like to live in a totalatarian society. 1984 follows the life of Winston Smith who is one of many working under the party but is wary and frustated on always living under the fear of the predominant party with its thought police and its ultimate ruler who everyone refers as 'Big Brother'.
The state is in complete control of the party even people's thoughts are controlled by the 'thoughtpolice' who are like a military group who arrests people for having a 'illicit' thought. Winston however starts rebelling on his own way by keeping a diary which is absurdly against the policy. He and his lover Julia starts a silent rebellion against the party by having free thoughts and keeping opinions about the party and 'Big Brother'. 1984 generates a feeling of frustration, distressment and discomfortness. Orwell has proficiently created a world where humanity and freedom are destroyed which puts a fear in readers' mind of our imminent future.
There are many important themes in 1984 which George Orwell has abruptly and profoundly touched such as importance of individuality, freedom of media, government control, totalitarianism. Orwell has given us a reality check on how is it to live under a dictatorship where everything including our thoughts is controlled. In 1984, the past is removed and the citizens are isolated from the outside world, the state only giving the gospel truth regarding other countries creating enmity among people for other nations. This showcases how important it is to know about our history and the outer world to compare and contrast with the government we are currently living with. It also highlishts the points the authority takes to subside its countrymen. The only turndown of this book was the potrayal of women. Women in general except Julia who is the protagonist love interest are potrayed as ignorant, stupid and easily swayed or docile.
Overall 1984 is an important book about political dominion and human race. The unexpected twists and turns with non justiciable but realistic ending makes the book intriguing and engrossing. 1984 is an important book especially for today's generation so they can decide which kind of future they want to create.
