This article talks about the unemployment crisis in our nation.

Unemployment is a prevailing issue in our country. It is a long-established problem which is responsible for a lot of problems our society is facing such as severe financial hardship, debt poverty, homelessness, diseases, stress, mental and financial instability and breakdown, alienation and so much more. It is high time that this rampant issue be confronted and controlled.

Unemployment has multilple causes behind it -factors like lack of knowledge, lack of basic education, lack of access to land for agricultural purposes, lack of infrastructure, rapid growth of populatione, lack of physical capital, lack of infrastructure etc.

Though it feels like it would take forever to overcome this issue, it is possible and can be achieved by making it a priority and treating it by keeping in mind all the negative impacts it has on a society. Here are a few solutions to help keep unemployment under check:

  • The very first solution for unemployment is to deal with the rising population in a suitable manner. This requires the policy-makers to make necessary changes so that the large population of the country can actually contribute towards nation-building and thrive together rather than being a burden.
  • The Government should pay much more heed towards the agricultural sector of the country as it is one of the main source of national income for a developing country like India. Agriculture is not only important for the supply of food but also for providing raw materials for other industries such as textiles, food etc. It is necessary to encourage and develop agriculture based industries in rural areas, this ensures that  the rural candidates don’t migrate to the urban areas. More employment opportunities should be generated in rural areas. Plantations, horticulture, dairy farming and animal husbandry should be encouraged.
  • The Indian Education System must be altered to shift towards practical learning and aim to generate skilled labour force. The quality of education needs to see a lot more improvement. The availability of highly skilled workers and labourers enables firms to hire a complement of skilled and unskilled labour
  • The Government must start schemes and initiatives to support budding entrepreneurs and small businesses get started. This helps generate a lot of employment opportunities. The government must provide easy loans, raw materials etc. for people to set up their own small businesses.
  • The Government could take a more pro-active role in helping the unemployed accept a job or risk losing the benefits. After a certain amount of time, the government could guarantee a public sector job. This could help in curbing unemployment significantly.
  • Many more resources have to be directed towards innovation and RD sectors, programmes so far are still too small and not very clear. Much innovation comes from small businesses, but this sector has not yet received the support it needs from the government. This will ensure to create many more job opportunities in the market.
  • Structural unemployment needs to be curbed and dealt with. This occurs when there are jobs available, but the existing workers don't seem to have the skills to fill in and take up those jobs. It occurs when technology advancements are on the rise and thus change the nature of the work itself. Structural unemployment can be dealt with effectively by trying to fix its very root - the education system. The current education system is outdated and needs to advance in a lot of areas. The curriculum, method of learning and teaching, practical aspects etc. are all contributors towards the production of skilled labour in the students.
