Dogs are human friendly and attractive creature. They are considered as human's best friend. Dogs like toys and play with them a lot. Teaching your dog to retrieve something is different than make them bring an moving object such as toys. But it becomes much more challenging to teach your dog retrieve item which is not a toy.
Step 1
Dog generally don't go near the things which are not familiar to them. So our first step should be to make them familiar with the thing you want them to bring. For example if you want your dog to bring you the blanket. You should try and make the blanket look interesting so that the dog should pic it and start playing with it. Here we are just trying to make him comfortable with the object letting him know that its ok to bite it and its not harmful.
Step 2
So as we know its easy to make dog pick up a moving object. Now try to make him pick the object when its not moving. You should also work on the let go skill after he tuk that in his mouth.
Step 3
For step three when the object you want him to bring is not moving at all and you want your dog to pic it up for you. You should make some inserting moves rather than trying to be subtle.
Step 4
Now we are introducing the distance here. You can't directly keep the object far away and make your dog bring that to you. You have to gradually increase the distance. Try to increase distance slightly and run in the opposite direction and see if your dog follows you. Remember dogs like chasing us.
Step 5
Once he follows you make him realize that he forgot to pic up the object. He will then pick that up and again will follow you. Don't forgot to teach him let go that object out of his mouth. Increase the distance gradually and see the results. Your dog will gradually get better picking up the things.
Step 6
Now this is the most challenging step of all the above. You have to make your dog pic the object without escorting him towards it. It is difficult because you will have to try different tricks and gestures to achive this. Sometimes he will go there and start chewing the object. You have put a lot of efforts to nail this step.You have to get closer when he move towards the object and then go far this motivates him to bring object to you.
Step 7
Now after all that hassel you finally made him pic objects but what about handling them. In this step you are gonna teach him to handle the object gently without aggressively tugging it. So everytime when she bring the object to you, you should reward him with his favorite toy and teach him how to let it go. This will take hundreds of attemp but eventually your dog will be trained to pic up things you want him to pic.
