Use of art and craft as therapy for people

Since several years, craft and art-based activities have been considered part of occupational therapy that emerged as health field around the end of the World War I in response to needs of returned soldiers. Knitting, craft activities and basket weaving were commonplace in repatriation support offered throughout veterans of world war.

At present researches have done to understand how craft is beneficial for mind and body of an individual. Much of the focus of people has been on mental health brought by knitting. Relaxation from stress, connection to tradition and reduction of an anxiety feeling have been considered beneficial psychological affect from practicing of crafts. On the other hand, quilting has been found to increase experience of well being of people at older age.

Strengths of practice of craft as a contributor of well-being can be solitary and collective and is up to individual’s decision. Suffering from several forms of social anxiety as well as capacity to draw away uncomfortable focus upon themselves into the process making of the craft practice.

Hence, craft continues to play part in enhancing quality life of those who participate in its practice.
