Nepotism In Organizations
"Nepotism is a natural part of the human endowment.."- Robert Jones
According to a research of 2015, around 108 of total organizations are working as a family-owned business in India, making it the third highest in the world, behind China with 167 and The United States at 121.
So whenever you hear about family business, the first thing that comes in your mind is that, each and every employee or worker of that particular organization must be a family member or a friend or an acquaintance, right?. Why? Because we all know that people prefer trust over talent.
In family business, nepotism is considered to be good, because of the fact that each and every person is familiar with all the things about that business, including the profits and losses too. So nepotism is good there. And it also helps in growing their business.
But the face of nepotism in other organizations, like in a company, is much more different from those of family businesses. How? The particular company have to appoint employees for the various works. Now let us suppose that they have appointed a manager from Sinha family, very talented and hard working guy, but now whenever there is a job vacancy in that particular company in which Mr. Sinha is working, he always fix one of his friend or cousin at that place, doesn't matter that particular person is familiar with the work or not, he just appoints, because of what? Relation or friendship.
Now what about the other peoples who have applied for the same job? They are still unemployed, doesn't natter how much talent they have or how much experience they have, they were not selected because their father or brother were not working with that company.
In countries like China and India, people considers nepotism as way of life and saw it in a positive manner and say that it is a good thing. But in developed countries like USA, nepotism is considered as a bane and their companies also didn't select anyone just because of the recommendation from their employee.
Mhatre and Riggio, two writers, wrote on a chapter of nepotism in their book that "Nepotism is unfair, unethical and inauthentic". And I truly believe in their words. As per the study, there are lakh of peoples who remains unemployed just because of the nepotism and favoritism at the work place.
Any employee from any company, works very hard to uplift his/her company. But his confidence fell down when he/she did not get that much appreciation from their. Why? Because all the appreciation, promotion and reward goes to one who is a sycophant and is also boss's favorite. What does any hard working employee do in such condition? Whether he will leave the job or will forget about reward or appreciation, that's it.
Many employee are only flattering their bosses and are getting promoted day by day, but one who are really working hard, not getting what they actually deserve.
So this is the reality of nepotism at various organizations or work places.
