Nepotism In Sports
"Nepotism sucks, not because it gives an opportunity to an unworthy person, but due to this thousands of skillful talents go unnoticed...'
- Gaurav
"Indian sports suffers from corruption and nepotism, it needs overarching regulatory body", said Mr. R.M. Lodha, the chief justice of supreme court. How much reality was in his words? He is a supreme court judge and is familiar with those words that he is saying.
So now the question is, whether nepotism is present in Indian sports or not? Well, the world of sports does not have much scope for nepotism or favoritism like things. Because there is only one way out of the most, to perform on the ground. But if a chief judge have said something like that, then what is the truth behind this?
Back then, In 2016, while the selection of Mumbai's U-16 team of west zone, nepotism in sports topic was on a urge. Why ? Because Arjun Tendulkar, son of "god of the cricket", the great, legendary Sachin Tendulkar, was selected in the team. But on the other side, in place of Arjun, there was another choice for the selectors that was Pranav Dhanawade, son of an auto driver.
The selectors have selected Arjun Tendulkar rather than selecting Pranav. Let me tell you, Pranav was the first person to score 1000 runs in one inning. So everyone was saying that Pranav deserve that place, which was given to Arjun. Lot of people have said that this was done because of the nepotism. But later it was founded to be misleading. Father of Pranav Dhanawade, Prashant Dhanawade have also said in an interview that the selection was fair and those who are saying that it was unfair, are trying to infamous Sachin sir.
In an interview, Akash Chopra, former Indian cricketer claimed that "Everyone, from Rohan Gavaskar to Arjun Tendulkar, they were selected in the particular teams because of their performances on the ground, not because their father have played for the Indian team".
So as compared with other fields, in Sport's era, nepotism and favoritism is very much lower. Anyone can't get admitted in national sports only because of their connection with a player.
On giving chance to an outsider, BCCI was always fair. BCCI provides opportunity to both an insider as well as to an outsider. So it is also another reason for the fair selections in the team. BCCI is also thinking on the topic of making some anti-nepotism laws. After these laws, it is going to be more fairer.
